ANALYSIS
Gossett made 20 appearances (18 starts) for Triple-A Worcester in 2021 and recorded a 4.22 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 98 innings. He hasn't appeared in the big leagues since he made five starts for the Athletics in 2018, but he'll likely serve as a non-roster invitee if spring training occurs in 2022.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2017
Gossett made just five poor big-league starts (and a handful of Triple-A appearances) before being shut down with elbow tightness in early June. He was making progress in his recovery but suffered a setback in late July which led to Tommy John surgery. A typical recovery timeline would give him at least a shot at returning late this season, though he probably won't have time to build up as a starter. Based on his performances thus far in the majors, he doesn't appear to be a great loss for the Athletics, as his ERA sits at an unimpressive 5.91 through his first 23 big-league starts. He's shown fine control (7.6% walk rate) and generated a league-average number of groundballs (42.9%), but a strikeout rate of just 16.3% puts a cap on his upside.
Someone forgot to tell Gossett that the Coliseum in Oakland is supposed to suppress home runs. The right-hander gave up nine long balls in just 32.2 innings at home last season, resulting in an ugly 2.07 HR/9 overall. In another era, we'd look at his 21.1 percent HR/FB rate and scream "regression," but dramatic improvement is far from a given. Gossett allowed hard contact on one-third of his batted balls and independent, third-party research suggests there have indeed been changes to the baseball (of course MLB denies it). He struggled to miss bats last season, managing just a 7.1 K/9, and his below-average 56.8 percent first-pitch strike rate points to impending regression with his walk rate (3.1 BB/9). Gossett figures to get another look in the starting rotation, but there's not enough here to warrant an add outside of AL-only formats.
A second-round pick in 2014, Gossett truly emerged as a legitimate prospect in 2016, starting the year at High-A and deftly navigating difficult pitching environments to finish the season at Triple-A. He spent the bulk of the year in the Texas League, where he posted an excellent 94:25 K:BB in 94 innings (16 starts). Gossett's four-pitch mix includes a fastball that sits in the low-90s, a solid low-80s changeup, a show-me curveball and a recently-developed cutter. It is not the repertoire of a frontline starter, but his above average command allows everything to play up to the point that he reasonably projects as a No. 4 starter. He should spend the bulk of 2017 with Triple-A Nashville, and if he can have success once again in another hitters' league, Gossett should get a chance to test his stuff in the big league rotation sometime in the second half.
