Makes return from minor-league IL
Overton (elbow) has given up five earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out three over 6.1 innings in two relief appearances for Triple-A Louisville since being reinstated from the 7-day injured list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Overton made three starts at the big-league level for the Reds last season before undergoing Tommy John surgery last May. He was cleared to begin a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on May 14 -- less than a year after his procedure -- before being pulled off the assignment a week later. Overton returned to action in the ACL over the All-Star break, and after eventually moving up to High-A Dayton for a rehab outing July 27, he was cleared to make his 2024 Louisville debut. The right-hander could eventually be an option for Louisville's rotation once he gets more stretched out.

Dan Marcus has one hitter atop his free-agent valuation list this week, and you can probably guess who it is.
This week's pitcher rankings are topped by Sandy Alcantara, who leads a deep group of two-start aces.
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Overton was a nice story for the Reds early in the 2022 season, posting a 1.82 ERA and 0.89 WHIP over four starts in April and May. Unfortunately, that's when he went down with a stress reaction in his lower back which wound up sidelining him for nearly four months before he made a late-season return as a reliever. As a 29-year-old who had just a 14:11 K:BB over 33 innings, Overton's numbers warrant plenty of skepticism. He didn't produce weak contact or induce grounders, and he managed to give up just one homer even though two of his starts came at Great American Ball Park and one was at Coors Field. Overton deserves a chance to compete for a rotation spot, but it's unlikely he'll be fantasy relevant even if he wins one.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Has shot at rotation spot
Overton "could break into" the Opening Day rotation in Cincinnati, per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Overton put up a shiny 2.73 ERA in four starts and two relief appearances last season with the Reds, though his K:BB of 14:11 was rather underwhelming. His primary competition for the final spot in the 2023 rotation will be Luke Weaver, who was signed to a one-year, $2 million free agent contract in January. Luis Cessa could perhaps be leapfrogged as well if Overton shows a little more swing-and-miss upside in camp this spring.
