Reed was released by the Diamondbacks on Friday, JJ Cooper of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Reed was a lower-level sleeper from 2014 through 2016, but arm injuries struck and he never quite regained his prior form. He reached High-A in 2016 but never made it further than that level.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
A second-round pick out of high school in 2014, Reed has the chance to develop into a very good left-handed starter. At 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, Reed has the build to be a workhorse. He’s also got the stuff to miss bats. Reed fanned 72 batters in 63.1 innings at Low-A Hillsboro last year and he has 112 strikeouts in 95.2 career minor league innings. He also has a 2.92 ERA and 1.087 WHIP in his professional career, and it appears that Reed is ready for better competition. He will have to demonstrate that he can handle more innings—his 63.1 innings last year are the most he’s pitched in a season professionally—and the organization will surely be careful as they stretch out the 19-year-old. Reed won’t be on the fantasy radar in 2016, but he could be a factor in two or three years as he develops.
A 6-foot-3, 245-pound lefty with four pitches ought to catch the attention of anyone sifting through last June’s draft class. However, if Reed doesn’t stand out on paper, he certainly stands out on the mound, thanks to two-inch long eye black that the Ultimate Warrior would have been proud of. That’s the kind of look only a supremely nasty, self-confident 18-year-old would attempt to pull off in rookie ball, and it speaks to a level of competitiveness that is enviable in a starting pitching prospect. Reed’s actions backed up his look, as he posted a 2.20 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with 40 strikeouts in 32.2 innings after getting drafted. His body was built to log innings, and if he continues to display this level of command, Reed has the potential to move fast.
