Past Fantasy Outlooks

2016
Ponce was used in two different roles during a hectic 2020 campaign, starting three games for the Pirates while coming out of the bullpen in his other two appearances. Though the sample size was small, he proved that he's capable of excelling in either role, posting a 3.18 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with 12 punchouts over 17 frames. In his three starts, the 26-year-old surrendered just four earned runs over 13.2 innings, fanning nine over that stretch. Ponce also finished the year with an impressive .163 BABIP and a .200 batting average against. He continues to prove that he's a talented hurler, and while he's in the mix to compete for a job in the starting rotation to kick off the 2021 campaign, a spot on the Opening Day roster is not a guarantee at this point.
Ponce's season debut was delayed by a forearm injury, which limited him to just 17 starts in 2016. The first half went extremely well: He owned a 2.50 ERA with 41 strikeouts and just a .592 OPS allowed through his first 36 innings. But Ponce didn't have enough in the tank to finish the season strong, as he allowed at least four runs in four of his final eight starts and watched his ERA inflate to 5.25. The dominant first half gives reason to believe in the talent that earned Ponce a second-round selection in 2015, but the combination of early-season injury and late-season ineffectiveness have stalled Ponce's prospect rise to a long-term watch candidate in dynasty leagues.
The Brewers selected Ponce 55th overall in the 2015 draft, and the 21-year old spent most of the year pitching for Low-A Wisconsin. He had a successful season, posting a 2.29 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in nine starts with a 40:9 K:BB ratio. Ponce's 6-foot-6, 235-pound frame allows him to throw his fastball in the upper 90s and overpower batters. He still is probably a year or two away from the big leagues and likely will spend the 2016 season developing in the minors.
