Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
2015
Each year, only a handful of teenagers hit double-digit homers at Low-A. Four top-100 dynasty league prospects did it last year: Eloy Jimenez, Brendan Rodgers, Austin Riley and Luis Alexander Basabe. The other prospect to accomplish the feat was Vallot, who missed time with elbow and head injuries, and actually led that group by homering once every 25.4 plate appearances. Unlike those other four prospects, Vallot was repeating the level after showing power and little else during his first crack in 2015. Secondly, even after repeating the level, it's clear that he has the worst hit tool and the most swing-and-miss (35.8 percent strikeout rate) of this small collection of prospects. The best-case scenario is that Vallot turns himself into a .250 hitter at the highest level, but he is more likely to plateau around .230. However, he has 70-grade raw power, and at catcher that could allow him to be a top-10 fantasy option annually.
Vallot was drafted after his junior year of high school by Kansas City in 2014. This last year he batted .545/.652/1.111 with 15 doubles, 13 home runs, and 62 RBI's in his senior year. Vallot is an all-around player overall with a plus-power potential from the right side of the plate along with great arm strength and defensive abilities. He's regarded as one of the best catchers in his draft class and he just turned 18 in August. Vallot still has to decide if he wants to go to Mississippi State or sign with the Royals this year, which most signs point to him signing. The young catcher is still likely a year or two away from the majors, especially with Salvador Perez at the big league level.
Vallot was selected with the 40th overall pick in the 2014 first-year player draft, and proceeded to slash .215/.329/.403 with seven home runs over 53 games at rookie ball. The Royals are optimistic about his strong arm and power potential, but there remain questions about his defense that they will hope to have answered during rookie or Low-A ball in 2015. At just 18 years old, Vallot is merely in the early stages of development, and won't see the majors for quite some time with Salvador Perez seemingly the long-term answer at catcher in Kansas City. Even if he rises quickly though the farm system, Vallot will still have to surpass Cam Gallagher and Zane Evans on the organizational depth chart in order to earn a more prominent role.
