2024 Fantasy Outlook
It's been a busy offseason for Thompson, who started 2023 with Texas and has been with four organizations since August. The Reds claimed him off waivers from Kansas City in October, then designated him in December to make room on the 40-man roster for re-signed reliever Buck Farmer. The Yankees then pounced on the available outfielder and added him to their 40-man. Aside from his MLB-ready defense, Thompson brings speed, and a lot of it. He stole 18 bags in 55 games for the Rangers in 2022 - fueled by an elevated BABIP - which was helpful to fantasy managers. The Reds saw a right-handed bat that could be added to a lefty-dominant outfield, while New York envisions the potential havoc Thompson would create on the base paths. All that would be needed is a competent bat and an ability to draw walks. Unfortunately, Thompson showed neither skill last season. Read Past Outlooks
Outrighted to Double-A
Thompson cleared waivers Saturday and was sent outright to Double-A Chattanooga, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Thompson was pushed off the 40-man roster Thursday but will remain within the Reds organization after going unclaimed off waivers. He is slashing .200/.243/.314/ across 37 plate appearances since being sent down to Double-A and could reach Triple-A if his hitting improves, though a return to the big leagues seems unlikely at the moment.

2018
Thompson was called up for his big-league debut in August and spent the final two months of the season as a lineup regular for Texas. The young outfielder finished with a .265/.302/.312 slash line, one home runs, nine RBI and 18 stolen bases in 55 games. He also had a 30.9 percent strikeout rate, which will need to be improved upon if he's going to stick in the lineup in 2023. Thompson was never a major power threat in the minors, but his .047 ISO during the first taste of the majors was comically low, and he had only six extra-base hits in 181 plate appearances. His average and speed in 2022 could provide some value across multiple categories, but he'll need to make better and stronger contact to have more staying power in the majors. Thompson should enter spring training with a strong chance to start Opening Day, at least.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Best role is fourth outfielder?
Kennedi Landry of MLB.com opines that Thompson's "best role" for the Rangers might be as a fourth outfielder or defensive replacement.
ANALYSIS
Thompson has the kind of raw speed that is always going to generate fantasy interest, but he'll need regular playing time to make those wheels matter. Landry notes that Brad Miller, Josh Smith, Ezequiel Duran, Jackson Frazier and Travis Jankowski will all be challenging for playing time in left field this spring in Rangers camp.
