2025 Fantasy Outlook
Elder reeked of pitchability in 2023 as he came out of nowhere to provide Atlanta with some much needed innings and outpitched his stuff. In 2024, he simply reeked. Elder is normally a high groundball rate pitcher, but he left too many balls up and the league hit 8 homers off him in 49.2 innings of work which pushed his ERA up and him up the road on I-85 to Gwinnett to work most of the season. Elder pitched better in Triple-A but will be coming to camp competing with multiple names that have better stuff. Since Elder's fastball is a poor pitch by both velocity and stuff measures, his success is wholly contingent upon his ability to keep the ball on the ground and staying out of fastball counts. He showed that is possible in 2023 when he was at his best, but 2024 also reminded us how fine a line pitchers of this build must walk. NL Only leaguers should keep an eye on Elder for the depth purposes and spot starts but not fill out a rotation with him as he is unlikely to work a big load this season with Atlanta. On Atlanta's wild-card roster
Atlanta recalled Elder from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
There's a decent chance Atlanta will need Elder to either start or eat some innings in relief in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series versus the Padres on Tuesday, as its pitching staff is short-handed following the doubleheader Monday and due to Chris Sale's (back) injury. Elder has collected a 6.52 ERA over 10 starts in the majors in 2024.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
A fifth-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft out of the University of Texas, Elder rocketed through Atlanta's minor-league system and made his big-league debut in April of 2022 at the ripe age of 22. He's enjoyed a good amount of success so far at baseball's highest level, carrying a 3.66 ERA through his first 228.2 innings of work with Atlanta, but the now 24-year-old right-hander probably won't be overly popular in fantasy drafts this spring because of his low strikeout rate. Leaning heavily on cutters, sinkers and sliders, Elder likes to put batters away by inducing soft contact as opposed to the more elite fantasy starters who rack up punchouts. He should be a solid source of ERA help and wins with a locked-in rotation spot for the reigning NL East champions, but don't count on a sudden change in approach.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Opening for spot start?
Atlanta is skipping Spencer Schwellenbach's turn in the rotation this weekend at Colorado, per Mark Bowman of MLB.com, which could provide an opening for Elder to be recalled for a spot start.
ANALYSIS
Elder would be on turn to take the open rotation spot Sunday since he last pitched Tuesday against the Brewers. However, the 25-year-old was demoted to Triple-A Gwinnett after he surrendered seven earned runs, so Atlanta would need to place a player on the injured list in order for him to be able to return to the big leagues so quickly. Elder has a 6.52 ERA across 10 starts in the majors this season, so he has minimal fantasy appeal if Atlanta gives him another look.
