Holt announced his retirement from professional baseball Thursday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Holt had a .579 OPS in 77 games with the Rangers last season but didn't see the field in 2022 after he failed to make Atlanta's roster for Opening Day. In addition to his stint with Texas, the 34-year-old spent most of his 10-year career in Boston but also saw action with the Pirates, Brewers and Nationals. He had a .262/.332/.362 slash line with 25 home runs, 234 RBI, 316 runs and 41 steals in 751 games.

Much to the chagrin of Red Sox Nation, Holt signed with the Brewers last offseason. Unfortunately, the utilityman never played up to "Brock Star" status, slashing .100/.222/.100 in 36 PA before being released in late August. Needing warm bodies, the Nationals signed Holt, with whom he posted a .262/.314/.354 in 70 PA -- better but still shy of his time with Boston. Holt's 2020 looks a lot like his 2017 season, with the same elevated strikeout rate and weak average exit velocity. Holt's improved play down the stretch and defensive versatility give him a chance to find a job as a reserve, capable of playing the infield and outfield. For fantasy, he's at best an endgame play in single-league formats, boosted a bit by third-base and outfield eligibility in most formats.

ANALYSIS
Along with Toronto, the Reds are another team that has touched base with Holt, according to Bobby Nightengale Jr. of The Cincinnati Inquirer. While the 31-year-old's market isn't necessarily sizzling, his ability to get on base at a decent clip and play all four infield spots and both corner-outfield spots makes him an ideal fit for just about any MLB bench.
