Jurado has re-signed with the Kiwoom Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization, Jee-ho Yoo of the Yonhap News Agency reports.
ANALYSIS
It seems likely that Jurado drew some interest from major-league clubs after he posted a 2.65 ERA and 147:41 over 183.2 innings for the Heroes in 2023. However, Kiwoom gave him $1.2 million guaranteed to stick around, a salary he surely wasn't getting in the states. The 27-year-old last pitched in the big leagues in 2020.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

Although Jurado showed slight improvement in his second season in the majors, he continued to struggle against big-league hitters. The right-hander's ERA (5.81) and xFIP (5.00) were each a touch better than his rookie marks but nonetheless fell well below league average. Never much of a punch-out pitcher, Jurado improved his strikeout rate almost six points to 15.0 percent in 2019, but the paltry mark still ranked in the bottom 5% leaguewide. Jurado's greatest strength is his ability to limit walks -- he notched a solid 6.7 BB% last season -- but even that can be a liability when hitters are knocking his pitches around as they did in 2019 to the tune of a 46.0 Hard%, fifth-highest among hurlers who tossed 100 or more innings. Jurado will be only 24 years old at the start of next season, but his overall body of work through 44 major-league contests does little to inspire confidence in his fantasy viability.
Jurado has shown advanced control for his age, along with the ability to keep the ball down in the zone. Using his best pitch, the sinking two-seam fastball, Jurado posted a 2.0 GB/FB ratio between High-A and Double-A in 2016. Jurado also walked just 34 batters in 123 innings. He does not have massive strikeout potential, and he does not have a huge frame, though he did fan 106 batters in those 123 innings. Jurado also has improving secondary pitches, most notably a changeup and curveball. Overall, the 6-foot-1 righty notched a 3.66 ERA last season, but his most impressive feat was posting a 3.86 ERA in the California League while pitching half his games at High Desert, one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the minors. Jurado will pitch in the majors, perhaps as early as the second half of this season, and he has all the tools to make it as a back-end starter.
Just by glancing at Jurado’s professional numbers, it is hard not to get overly excited about the 20-year-old righty. His 2.45 ERA last season at Low-A Hickory was the highest mark of his three-year run as a professional, and he has never had a WHIP higher than 1.11 in 186.2 innings across rookie ball and Low-A. Jurado also boasts an insane 177:23 K:BB over that span, which should be enough for him to get on the radar of most dynasty league owners. Unfortunately, his gaudy numbers do not match the scouting report. He certainly projects as a big league starter, but it’s more of a command/control profile which has been more than enough to feast on hitters at the lower levels. Even though his realistic ceiling may only be that of a mid-rotation starter, his control and advanced pitch mix means the floor is significantly higher than that of his contemporaries in the lower levels.
