Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
A starter throughout his minor-league career, Kay broke summer camp on the Blue Jays' 30-man roster. He was expected to play a swingman role but ended up pitching exclusively out of the bullpen, making 13 appearances in relief before being optioned to the team's alternate training site in mid-September. Kay was never comfortable as a reliever, walking 14 while allowing three homers in 21 innings, though he did fan 22 batters. Toronto has opened its window to win and taken measures to strengthen the rotation, so Kay's future may be in a similar bullpen role, which doesn't lend itself to fantasy. To get back in the rotation mix, he needs to work on command and control, but with average stuff, his ceiling is capped as an innings eater. Kay is probably better off focusing on a couple offerings to maximize his effectiveness as a reliever.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Rotation opportunity on tap?
Kay is a candidate to slide into the Blue Jays' starting rotation as a result of Chase Anderson's placement on the injured list due to an oblique injury.
ANALYSIS
Kay saw major-league action last season, making three appearances, including two starts, and posting a 1-0 record, 5.79 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over 14 innings. The young southpaw had an uneven minor-league career, but his 2.50 ERA over 36 innings at Triple-A Buffalo prior to last year's promotion supports the notion he could hold down the fort for a handful of outings before Anderson returns. In addition to Kay, manager Charlie Montoyo could opt to turn to Ryan Borucki, who's produced mixed results over his first pair of big-league stints the last two seasons.
