Undergoes season-ending surgery
Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said Saturday that DeSclafani will be out for the season after undergoing flexor tendon surgery on his right elbow, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The silver lining is that DeSclafani didn't require Tommy John surgery, which likely would have resulted in him missing a sizable chunk of the 2025 season as well. DeSclafani's flexor tendon surgery will entail a lengthy recovery in its own right that will prevent him from pitching this season, but he should have a better chance at receiving clearance ahead of spring training or at some point during camp. With DeSclafani opening the season on the shelf and now out of the picture for at least 2024, Louie Varland is cemented as the Twins' fifth starter.

DeSclafani was limited to just 99.2 innings in 2023 due to a flexor strain after throwing just 19 frames in 2022 because of an ankle injury. He did not require surgery and the hope is that he will be ready for Opening Day in 2024, but it's far from a guarantee. When on the mound, DeSclafani saw a decline in his strikeout rate (7.1 K/9), a worrisome 8.8% swinging strike rate and the second-highest walk rate of his career. At age 34 with two years of health issues, he's not a sure bet to hold down a rotation spot.
