Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Zerpa opened the season on the 60-day IL with a tendon issue in his left shoulder. He was activated just after the All-Star break and optioned to Triple-A Omaha. Zerpa posted a 4.73 ERA over six starts (some during rehab), spanning 26.2 innings before he was called up by the Royals to begin August. Zerpa served as a primary pitcher, traditional starter, and reliever over the final two months. Zerpa only walked eight batters in 42.2 frames, but he fanned just 36. The main reason he recorded a high 4.85 ERA was yielding seven homers. The Royals have fortified their rotation with veterans Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha, returning Zerpa to a swingman role. With his lack of dominance, and proclivity for allowing the long ball, Zerpa lacks fantasy charm.
Zerpa had an alright 2022, posting a 4.02 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 69:25 K:BB across 71.2 innings across the top-two levels of the minors. The southpaw also looked good in a small sample with the Royals when they needed him as a starter. He's got a fastball that sits around 94 mph, and he's just 23 years old, so he's still got time to refine his game in the minors. The one concern is a knee injury that kept him sidelined for two months in the second half of the campaign, and to a lesser extent, the arm discomfort that ended his last rehab outing of the year early. It's unclear if either of those issues will linger into 2023, though it's likely Zerpa at least begins the campaign at Triple-A rather than in the majors.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Drawing trade interest
PKansas City Royals
December 11, 2024
The Royals have received trade inquiries on Zerpa, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Zerpa had a solid 2024 season in the Royals' bullpen, collecting a 3.86 ERA and 49:19 K:BB over 53.2 innings. The left-hander came up through the minors as a starting pitcher and made some starts in his first three seasons with the Royals, and Rogers notes that it's possible other teams would want him in that role. No trade appears imminent.
