ANALYSIS
He was sent to minor-league camp Monday along with Luke Williams, Eli White and David Fletcher, with their demotions suggesting that Forrest Wall has won the final available bench spot on Atlanta's Opening Day roster. 2020
The veteran shortstop spent most of 2023 with the Angels, and he posted a .548 OPS in 54 big-league games. Velazquez was picked up by Atlanta in September and re-signed on a minor-league deal for 2024. He's played in parts of six MLB seasons and has earned a reputation as a strong defender and baserunner but brings little else to the table offensively. Velazquez has 30 steals in just 443 plate appearances over the past two seasons, but his .191 average and 33.6 percent strikeout rate during that span illustrate his severe limitations at the plate.
After playing for four teams in three seasons prior to 2022, Velazquez settled into some stability in his first campaign with the Angels, logging career-high marks with 125 games and 349 plate appearances. The expanded opportunity was partly due to necessity -- infielders David Fletcher and Anthony Rendon each missed over 100 games due to injury -- though Velazquez's defensive prowess also factored in. It's safe to say that his offensive performance didn't resonate as favorably, as Velazquez's 50 wRC+ and 34.1 percent strikeout rate were third-worst and sixth-worst, respectively, among big-league hitters with at least 300 plate appearances. The 28-year-old at least managed to swap 17 bags in 18 attempts, and his 93rd-percentile sprint speed would be a much more promising asset if he had even average on-base skills. However, it's difficult (both in fantasy and in real life) to spend a lineup spot on a player with such dreadful offensive production, and with Fletcher and Rendon both back in the fold along with the emerging Livan Soto and the newly acquired Gio Urshela, Velazquez will likely step back into an infield-depth role next season.
Velazquez tripled his career plate appearances in 2019, coming to the plate 24 times while grabbing just two hits. He spent much of the year injured, battling both thumb and hamstring issues and only appearing in 55 games in the minors. In the 46 of those games that came at the Triple-A level, split between the Rays' and Indians' systems on either side of being traded for international bonus money in early July, he hit a modest .264/.312/.431. The 25-year-old has yet to have much success at the highest levels, and he was never a particularly exciting prospect, but he could still have a role on a big-league bench. He's already appeared at six positions in his brief time in the majors, including both middle infield spots and center field, and he is a plus runner on the bases. Even if he remains on Cleveland's roster all year, he is unlikely to play enough or hit enough for his speed to really matter.

Could rejoin active roster
SSLos Angeles Angels
July 2, 2023
Velazquez joined the Angels as a member of the taxi squad Sunday and has a locker in the clubhouse, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old was demoted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday, but he's quickly rejoined the big club since Brandon Drury is nursing a shoulder injury. Drury is on the lineup card for Sunday's game against Arizona, so it appears Velazquez will have to wait before potentially returning to the active roster.
