Nearing rehab assignment
OFWashington Nationals
Foot
September 18, 2024
Manager Dave Martinez said Tuesday that Call (foot) will embark on a rehab assignment soon in hopes of returning before the end of the regular season, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old landed on the injured list in late August due to a partial tear of the plantar fascia in his left foot, and he's now on the cusp of returning to game action. Call has been productive when up with the Nationals this season with a .343/.425/.525 slash line in 30 games, and a healthy finish to the campaign would set him up for a normal offseason heading into 2025.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Call began last season in a fourth outfielder role and spent some time back in the minors late in the first half. However, between injuries and/or ineffectiveness with the Nationals' other outfielders, Call essentially had the usage of a regular even if it wasn't always consistent. The 29-year-old graded out very well defensively - mostly in center field - and ranked as an above-average baserunner, as well. However, while Call slashed a solid .252/.352/.393 against left-handed pitching, it was more than canceled out by an abysmal .171/.282/.258 line versus righties. Call is a fourth outfielder from Central Casting, but the Nats' dearth of impact outfielders could mean he's thrust into a meaningful role again.
A third-round selection by the White Sox in 2016, Call was traded to Cleveland in 2018. He got his first big-league opportunity in 2022 but logged only 16 plate appearances in the majors before Cleveland moved on. The Nationals, shifting into a rebuild, brought Call in on a waiver claim and he finished with a .772 OPS and five homers in 35 games with the club down the stretch. He stole three bases following the move, though he was also caught stealing three times. Team context is always important, and in this case the situation is favorable for a player looking to prove himself as a late bloomer. The 28-year-old tentatively sits atop the depth chart in left field for Washington.
Call was drafted in the third round out of Ball State, and more than held his own when assigned to rookie ball. He hit .308 in 27 games at that level, tallying more walks (19) than strikeouts (18) in limited action in the Pioneer League. His advanced approach at the dish allowed the White Sox to move him quickly to Low-A, where he finished the 2016 season. Call slashed .308/.361/.339 with three home runs, 18 RBI and 10 steals over 46 games. The center fielder has a bit more pop than expected, though it certainly appears he has more speed than home run power at this time. The White Sox could choose to be aggressive with Call and opt to send him to High-A to start next season. The 22-year-old righty has leadoff hitter skills, and the White Sox believe he may be able to add some muscle to his frame as well.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Role in center likely secure
OFWashington Nationals
May 23, 2023
Victor Robles' back injury hasn't seen notable improvement since he landed on the injured list May 8, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com, which likely means Call will continue to operate as Washington's primary center fielder for the foreseeable future.
ANALYSIS
Call had a decent first month of the season with a .708 OPS, but he's fallen off through 20 games in May with a .178/.241/.301 slash line. Despite the struggles, it appears the 28-year-old's role is secure for the time being, as he's now made 15 straight starts in center field.
