Green spent the majority of the first half of last season with the big club, but he struggled in a pinch hitting role and spent the second half with Triple-A Nashville. Green owns a career .899 Triple-A OPS, so it is not that he needs more time in the minors. He has a good shot to make the club as a utility infielder, but with Aramis Ramirez entrenched at third base, Green will have to fare better in a bench role to stick with the big club all season, while his playing time figures to be very limited.
Green hit .336/.413/.583 in 120 games for Triple-A Nashville before getting called up to Milwaukee and eventually earning a postseason roster spot. Though he only hit .270/.270/.351 in 20 games while with the Brewers, he shows a little bit of promise. Green struggles against left-handed pitching and may have to platoon down the road if he's unable to carve out a utility role this spring. Even with the signing of Aramis Ramirez, it's hard not to think that he'll get every opportunity to make the team out of spring training. He could be worth a late flyer based on what he's done in the minors.
Green took a step backwards after being the Brewers' Minor League Hitter of the Year in 2008. He missed the first part of the season and then hit .258/.330/.356 in 87 games for Double-A Huntsville. Green has always shown solid plate discipline and doesn't strike out much. He just may not develop enough power to play third base every day in the majors. Green is behind Casey McGehee and Mat Gamel on the depth chart and will start out at Double-A or Triple-A in 2010. A good season could boost his prospect status once again, but he doesn't have All-Star potential.
Green was Milwaukee's 2007 minor league hitter of the Year and followed up that campaign with another solid one at High-A Brevard County where he hit .289/.382/.443 in 114 games. He played most of his games at third base, but is versatile enough to play second base. At 5-10 there are some concerns about his power potential, but so far he hasn't shown any signs of slowing down. He'll likely start the season at Double-A Huntsville as the Brewers see if he's their third baseman of the future.
Green was named the Minor League Player of the Year in the Milwaukee system for 2007. He hit .327/.406/.922 for Low-A West Virginia with 14 home runs in 111 games. He did commit 23 errors, mainly at third base, but his long-term future may be at second base. He'll likely move up to High-A next season.
