Roenicke was a workhorse in Colorado's bullpen last season, leading all MLB relievers with 88.2 innings pitched as the team's move to a four-man rotation often required Roenicke to throw two multi-inning outings per week. With his return to a traditional bullpen in Minnesota, Roenicke should see a significantly reduced workload, which should spare him of the second-half fade he experienced with the Rockies. Roenicke's 4.4 BB/9 remains an issue, especially if his 76.7 percent strand rate takes a hit. Fortunately, the move to a dramatically better pitching environment in Target Field should help mask some of those flaws.
Roenicke once again bounced around between Toronto and Triple-A Las Vegas, plying most of his craft at Triple-A where he posted an 8.2 K/9 in 36 appearances. At this point, he's more bark than bite as he's never had success in limited work in the majors and hasn't ever dominated in the minors either despite a live arm that scouts seem to love. He'll compete for one of the last spots in the Toronto bullpen.
Roenicke's got a live arm but hasn't been able to harness it yet in the big leagues. He came over to the Jays in the Scott Rolen trade but didn't make much of an impression (7.13 ERA, 1.755 WHIP in 13 relief appearances). Well, not a good impression anyways. He fared better while with the Reds and while his numbers have been nice in the minors, he's never exactly dominated there either. He's got some upside but he'll need a strong spring in order to separate himself from the herd and claim a spot in the Toronto bullpen.
Roenicke put together a pretty nice season in relief between Double-A and Triple-A in 2008, but he had to, having turned 26 in August. Relief prospects may not grow on trees, but they're also not scarce. The Reds were rumored to be offering Roenicke as part of the bounty for a starting catcher or a power bat, as well they should. If he doesn't get dealt this offseason, he'll still be behind David Weathers, Jared Burton and Mike Lincoln among the right-handed non-closers in the Reds' bullpen.
Relief prospects are pretty difficult to evaluate, because of the small sample size of innings that they throw. Roenicke had a nice 2007 campaign, but what can you really tell from a combined 46 innings? Roenicke likely will begin 2008 in Double-A Chattanooga, but he could be on the fast track should he continue his success.
