Stavinoha has spent most of the last three years with Triple-A Memphis, so it shouldn't be a shock that he had an .843 OPS there last year. He has decent power, but as a corner outfielder, he'll need to be better than decent. He'll get a shot at the left-field job if the Cardinals are unable to bring anyone in, but he's more likely to be used as a pinch-hitter and/or fifth outfielder.
Although he had a strong season for Triple-A Memphis, Stavinoha doesn't look ready for the majors yet. He hit just four singles in 25 at-bats after a September call-up. He's buried on the St. Louis depth chart and is already 26, so it's unlikely he'll get much play for the Cardinals this year.
Stavinoha showed progress at Double-A Springfield in 2006, but he struck out 81 times with only 28 walks. He has some work to do. He struggled in the AFL, too, which may keep him in Springfield for the start of the season. If he plays well early on, the Cardinals expect him to rise through the ranks quickly.
After being drafted from LSU in the seventh round of the 2005 draft, Stavinoha had little trouble adjusting to minor league pitching. He will most likely start 2006 at high-A Palm Beach, but since he'll turn 24 this season, look for a quick rise to Double-A if he shows he can handle high-A.
Drafted in the seventh round in 2005 out of LSU, Stavinoha is an intriguing hitter with plus power and strong strike zone judgment. He was a senior, which hurt his draft status, but he looks like a potential bargain for the Cardinals.
