Willits' role with the Angels has fluctuated the last couple seasons - starter, reserve, pinch-runner, out of the picture - and he likely will open the 2011 season in a backup role. Willits' only true fantasy asset is his speed; and considering he has stolen just nine bases since 2008, he is unlikely to be a valuable part of any fantasy team barring a rash of injuries.
His 2007 was a fluke: .202 with six extra-base hits in 228 plate appearances since then. The speed plays, but teams carrying just four bench players can't afford to use one of them on a pinch-runner with no bat. He's not a random steals play unless you're deep into a PCL fantasy league.
Willits took a step back last season as there were simply too many veteran outfielders on the squad for him to make much of an impact. Willits only received 108 sporadic at-bats throughout the season and struggled to a .194 batting average. He has the speed to be a consistent base-stealing threat, yet he doesn’t have the bat or the playing time at this point. Willits remains an intriguing player, but he won’t provide much fantasy-wise unless he finds himself receiving regular playing time once again.
Entering the 2007 season, Willits was a relative unknown. He was part of a collection of Angels outfielders that all had similar and unimpressive skill sets. However, Willits was given an opportunity early in the season and he responded by hitting .293, stealing 27 bases, and providing the Angels with a quality bat at the top of their order. Willits was later moved to the ninth spot in the order, which allowed the Angels to take advantage of his speed and high on-base percentage. Willits doesn't provide much in the power department and will likely begin the season as the Angels' fourth outfielder, so he won't have much value early in the season. He'll be an injury away from a spot in the starting lineup and becomes a viable option - especially for steals - if he sees regular at-bats.
Listed at 185 pounds, he looks for all the world like an underfed Craig Counsell. Willits hits for average, draws walks and steals bases, making him a very good fourth outfielder for a team that is heavily right-handed and aging in the pasture. Willits might do a decent Jeff DaVanon impersonation for a few years if given the chance.
Willits will likely start 2006 back at Double-A Arkansas. He has speed to burn, is slightly above average with the bat, but with almost no power. Should he find his way to the majors at some point, he'll make a cheap source for steals.
