Perez spent last season at Triple-A Durham, a year removed from shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum. He flashed some speed there (24 steals), but hit only .233 in 385 at-bats. Despite these numbers, Rays manager Joe Maddon was always a fan of Perez, so there's reason to believe he could emerge if given a chance. That could happen in Chicago after coming over in the Matt Garza deal. He could win a bench role, possibly as the fourth or fifth outfielder. Keep an eye on his numbers in spring training as the Cubs may decide to give him a couple of starts each week if he impresses.

Despite being held hitless against the Rockies, Perez has been opening eyes as a candidate for a spot as a reserve outfielder, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. "When you have a guy with that kind of skill and with that tool, to just sit and watch and say, 'OK, when's he going [to steal]?' I'm not dictating any of that," manager Mike Quade said. "The green light is the green light, and he's going to pick his pitch. It's a real nice luxury to have that kind of speed. And if you can get on first, it's a heck of a thing. The idea that the guy can steal a base is huge. But the threat can go a long way in causing pitchers a lot of problems."
