ANALYSIS
The soon-to-be 30-year-old outfielder had been sitting in the Mariners' system since 2005 until they opted to cut ties with him during the offseason. He tried to pick up with the Mets during the spring, but that relationship didn't last long, and he ultimately ended up with the Padres back in mid-May. He showed some decent power potential a few years back but hasn't really done much in the last two seasons, so a night like this was welcomed by him and his manager. He doesn't figure to be anything more than organizational depth at this point, but given the health of the Padres' outfield, there always seems to be a chance.

Wilson was drafted in the second round in 2001 and is 28, so his prospect status has long since faded, but he found himself in Seattle for a brief time last season. He was technically the right-handed platoon in left field, but all that meant was he barely played. A career minor leaguer, Wilson has power, but he's also a strikeout machine. The Mariners have plenty of outfield options this season, so they likely won't need Wilson's warm body.
Wilson increased his power last season in his second stint at Double-A West Tennessee, recording 55 extra-base hits, including 27 homers, and greatly improved his plate discipline. He increased his walks from 17 in 55 games in 2007 to 64 in 119 games last season and shaved his strikeouts from 1.6 a game (89 in 55 games) to less than one a game (117 in 119 games). More improvement on that front is needed, but Wilson, who likely will begin the season at Triple-A Tacoma, appears to be on the right track.
A second-round draft pick in 2001, Wilson is a bit of a late bloomer. He was slowed by hamstring injuries and finally gave up switch hitting so he could focus on improving his natural right-handed swing. In mid-June he made his way to Double-A San Antonio and got off to a hot start, hitting .323 with six homers and a 39:20 K:BB through 127 at-bats. But in his final 117 at-bats he sunk to .170 with a 46:8 K:BB, though he maintained his HR swing with another six homers. Wilson has some work to do with his bat and his plate discipline, but he has time since he's not one of the organzation's top prospects.
