2008
The 27-year-old Brown spent his third season with Triple-A Pawtucket in 2009, losing some of the power he showed in 2008 while keeping a respectable batting average. Playing for an organization that didn't know where its next catcher was coming from prior to the trade-deadline acquisition of Victor Martinez, Brown was never considered a legitimate candidate. He's got good defensive skills and works well with pitchers. If he continues to improve with the bat, he could eventually land as a backup at the major league level. That probably won't happen in 2010 as Boston still has Jason Varitek under contract.
Brown played a full season at Triple-A Pawtucket in 2008, showing a good bat with decent power and good plate discipline. He's got above-average defensive skills and works well with pitchers, but his name never comes up when discussing the organization's catching situation. That tells us all we need to know about his chances to be the starting catcher if Jason Varitek moves on.
Brown made two stops last season with most of his work for Double-A Portland of the Eastern League. He's known more as a defensive catcher who calls a good game, but hit a respectable .268. If Doug Mirabelli is not in Boston's plans next year, Brown could compete with George Kotteras - if the Red Sox don't sign a veteran to back up Jason Varitek. Long range, the club has to think about a replacement for Varitek, whose contract ends after 2008.
