Gonzales was released from minor league camp Sunday, insidetherockies.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's been all downhill for Gonzales since testing positive for a banned substance in Japan. He showed up to camp out of shape and was never considered a serious contender for a utility spot on the roster.

Gonzalez spent the past two seasons playing in Japan, but was suspended for a year by Japanese baseball last May after testing positive for amphetamines. He'll try to win a utility job this spring. He had some Coors-aided power in his prime, so there's some upside here if he wins a utility role.
Sold by the Rockies to the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Central League in January 2007, so don't leave him on your cheat sheet thinking he's an acceptable Coors Field end-game pick.
Gonzalez played every position but pitcher and catcher in 2005. Over the last 25 games he hit .321 and earned himself the second base job to start 2006. With plenty of positional eligibility and good hitting for average, he's worth a look.
Gonzalez can fill in at any infield position and also has a shot at Colorado's final starting outfield spot should the team look within the organization to replace Jeromy Burnitz. Gonzalez put up solid numbers in 2004 and Coors Field is certainly a formidable ally for any batter, so if he does end up earning a starting role he's worth a late-round flier, especially in deep NL-only leagues.
A Rule 5 pick out of the Indians' organization, Gonzalez's strengths include his defensive versatility and his ability to hit for average. He has decent plate discipline but not too much power, which will be partially masked by Coors Field.
