After a solid spring training in which Moore played at all infield and outfield positions, he was the odd man out when the Orioles decided to go with a 13-man pitching staff. He struggled throughout the 2008 season in the minors and with a few prospects on the way up, Moore will again be a long shot to make the 25-man roster.
Moore's strikeout rate probably scares most GM's, but Andy MacPhail did well to grab Moore when he was able to spin off Steve Trachsel at the trade deadline in 2007. Moore takes his share of walks and has the capability of putting together a 30-homer season. If the O's can find a taker for Melvin Mora before this season's deadline, they should pull the trigger and give Moore a shot to see what he can do.
Moore matched his productive 2005 high-A numbers almost identically at Double-A last year, once again getting on base reliably and hitting for decent power. He strikes out a little more often than we'd like, and while his on-base and power skills are good, they're not outstanding. With Aramis Ramirez locked up for five more years, Moore is blocked on the Cubs, but he's the kind of player a savvy big-league GM could roster on the cheap somewhere down the road.
The eighth overall pick of the 2002 draft, Moore hit well at High-A Daytona last season, but struggled with his strike zone judgment, whiffing 134 times while taking just 55 walks. He's still just 22, so a good season at Double-A would boost his stock, but it's hard to see it happening until he takes a few more free passes or makes better contact.
Moore has significant power and a good arm and is considered the top third baseman in the Tigers’ farm system. Moore’s main weakness is probably his plate discipline, as he has struck out 141 times in 147 games as a pro. The Tigers want to move Moore to high class A to start off 2004, although they are not sure he’s ready for the leap.
