Ramirez was never known for having pinpoint control, but he struggled with walks (5.0 BB/9) and was generally unreliable for the Mets last season. In addition to the free passes, he lost 1.3 mph from his fastball and nearly two mph from his changeup, while the latter became a negative pitch for the veteran right-hander. The Mets elected to let Ramirez become a free agent during the offseason. It's likely that he will land somewhere with a reasonable chance of opening 2013 in a middle-relief role.
Ramirez posted a 2.62 ERA with a 1.165 WHIP, 66:26 K:BB ratio and a 1.52 GB/FB ratio last season, but the Giants are deep in the bullpen, however, so he was traded to the Mets in the offseason in a deal that also included Andres Torres and Angel Pagan. Ramirez goes from one pitchers’ park to another, and his value shouldn’t change much, as he’ll work in middle relief for the Mets.
After posting a 4.46 ERA over 42.1 innings with Boston last season, Ramirez recorded a miniscule 0.67 ERA over 27.0 innings after a trade to San Francisco. The latter came with a poor 15:11 K:BB ratio, so it's safe to say plenty of luck came into play. The .164 BABIP and 95.7 percent strand rate are both clearly unsustainable, so expect a big drop in 2011, when he should once again act as a middle reliever.
Ramirez became a vital piece of Boston's bullpen and pitched very well in the first half before losing opportunities to Daniel Bard and Billy Wagner in the second half. As he was used less in the second half, his effectiveness suffered somewhat. With Wagner and Takashi Saito moving onto Atlanta in the offseason, Ramirez figures to get more use in 2010.
Ramirez came over to the Royals from the Rockies toward the end of spring training, and was an immediate positive force in the bullpen. He struggled a bit in May, but was otherwise very good pitching as a right-handed set-up man. He was dealt to Boston during the offseason for Coco Crisp, where he should pave the way to closer Jonathan Papelbon.
Ramirez was expected to fill an important set-up role in 2007, but was sidelined much of the season with an elbow injury. He tried to make a return in the second half but was unsuccessful before ending up on the 60-day DL. The Rockies are hoping an offseason of rehab will return Ramirez to his 2006 form. At best, he will be a right-handed set-up man, but if he struggles early he may find himself back at Triple-A.
Ramirez was called up when Mike DeJean was injured and the former Yankee ended up vastly exceeding expectations. He's a hard thrower and the Rockies felt his arsenal would better serve in a relief role, especially after he put up a 4.46 ERA in the minors working primarily as a starter. It appears they were correct. Ramirez will likely return to setting up closer Brian Fuentes this year and rack up the holds.
Acquired in the Shawn Chacon trade, Ramirez spent the year at Triple-A Columbus and Double-A Tulsa posting a combined 5.33 ERA. He averages a little under a strikeout per inning but gives up too many hits to be effective. He'll be in Tulsa again this year.
