Botts mashed Triple-A pitching again (.320/.436/.545 in 102 games) before earning a callup to the majors. To Texas' credit, they stuck with Botts despite poor numbers (.240/.326/.335 in 167 at-bats), but there will be questions as to whether he'll be able to hit major league pitching once again when spring rolls around. His numbers-to-date in the Mexican Winter League (.303/.411/.507 in 152 at-bats, .375/.462/.625 against lefties) show promise but his bat against lesser competition has never been questioned. He'll be given a shot at a roster spot again this spring, and could be a nice lefty-mashing platoon option if nothing else.
Botts flopped in a brief mid-season audition with Texas, but his .309/.398/.582 line at Triple-A Oklahoma City backed up a nice 2005 season as well. He'll be 26, so he's not a top prospect, and he's had some issues staying healthy, but there's some value here if he can find some at-bats in the majors.
Botts backed up a nice 2004 campaign at Double-A Frisco with a solid 2005 at Triple-A Oklahoma City. Already 25 years old, he's not a major prospect, but Botts could fit into the right field mix now that he's been converted to the outfield. Watch his role this spring - he could surprise if he ends up with 300-350 at-bats for Texas.
Botts finally flashed the power that his 6-6 frame suggests is possible. That it came at Double-A at the age of 24 is concerning, but he backed it up with a big season in the Arizona Fall League (.355/.461/.570) which was enough to get him added to the 40-man roster. There's talk now that a big spring could get him some at-bats as Texas' DH in 2005. He was moved to the outfield in the AFL, so there could be some corner outfield at-bats for him as well.
Botts is a big kid who's been playing at least one level down in the minors given his age. He hasn't flashed much power in the minors (Texas system), which makes him a light-hitting corner-type in the mold of Scott Hatteberg. He needs a change of scenery and a big year split between Double-A and Triple-A to eventually get a regular gig in the majors.
With corner infielders aplenty in the Rangers' organization, Botts was shifted to the OF this season. He's a big guy at 6-foot-6 but is quite agile. He has been a walk machine in the minors but needs to develop more power if he wants to advance.
