After a disappointing 2009 campaign, the Tigers decided not to bring Thames back for another season. He struggled down the stretch and finished the season with just 13 home runs, his lowest total since 2005. At 33, Thames still has a lot of power, but hell have a hard time finding much more than a platoon gig for an American League team in need of a designated hitter.
Thames hit his 25 home runs in 316 at-bats last year, but 10 of those came in one month. He has a ton of power and is very streaky. The Tigers may consider dealing him this winter if they get a solid offer. Carlos Guillen moving to left field full time next season leaves Thames with less playing time to open the year. If he remains with Detroit it would be fair to expect about the same production again this season.
The Tigers had Thames learn first base last season in an effort to get his bat into the lineup a bit more. He didn’t play as much as in 2006, but he still managed hit 18 home runs in 269 at-bats. Thames struggled to make contact so his batting average will always suffer, but he hit .310/.341/.586 against lefties last year. The Tigers may have an ideal platoon situation in left field, as Jacque Jones struggles mightily against southpaws.
Thames showed some big-time power last season, hitting 26 homers in 348 at-bats with the Tigers. Manager Jim Leyland wants to find a way to get him at-bats this season and has suggested that the team consider giving Thames some time at first base. He's also a candidate to be traded and could wind up with a significant boost to his fantasy value if he goes to a team that would give him a starting job.
Thames never received much of an opportunity last season despite crushing the ball at Triple-A Toledo all season. He's worthy of a reserve role in the majors and could get an opportunity to stick with the Tigers this season if the team doesn't bring in any free agent outfielders.
Thames was very impressive in the limited action he saw last season, demonstrating notable athleticism and power (he hit a homer every 16.4 AB). While the Tigers starting outfield of Magglio Ordonez, Craig Monroe and Alex Sanchez is fairly set heading into spring training, Thames is worth picking up if one of those injury-prone players were to miss extensive time.
A reserve outfield role is about all Thames can hope for, as his prospect star has rapidly faded.
After a breakout season at Double-A Norwich in 2001, Thames fell apart at Triple-A Columbus last year, going .207/.297/.378 in 386 at-bats. Thames has the tools -- good power, a little bit of foot speed and a good arm -- but he'll need to get back on track in the minors before he gets a shot with the Yankees.
