Chacin had his season cut short due to a shoulder injury after five April starts and an abbreviated rehab attempt. There wasn't anything in his peripherals when healthy to suggest any sort of long-term success, and there's even less to like now that his shoulder has been cut on. He'll be back competing for a spot with the Blue Jays in spring training, but that's their problem and you'd be wise to keep from making it one of yours.
Elbow problems limited Chacin to just 17 starts in 2006 -- his typically suspect K:BB limited his effectiveness. Allowing a whopping 19 HR in 87.1 IP didn't help either. He was better once healthy in September, posting a 1.26 WHIP in five starts, but still managed a poor 14:9 K:BB in 29.1 IP. The Blue Jays are hoping he'll be needed as nothing more than a fourth or fifth starter.
It's hard to get a read on Chacin's season: he really struggled against righties (155 IP, 175 H, 55 BB, 18 HR and 88 K), and down the stretch (66.1 IP, 72 H, 26 BB, 42 K in August and September), but still managed a tidy 3.72 ERA. Given his spotty minor league track record and his continued control problems, how long can it last?
Few pitchers are dropped from the 40-man roster only to clear waivers and post a composite 18-2 record in the minor leagues later in his career. Chacin was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Year before making two starts at both Triple-A Syracuse and Toronto. His K/BB ratio at Double-A doesn't scream dominance so there will be some associated growing pains if he finds himself in Toronto's rotation.
The small lefty has shown an ability to get left-handers out but continues to struggle against righties. Continues to see a decrease in K/BB ratios as he advances up the minors, so he's eventual role will be a situational lefty when he makes the big leagues. He'll need to pitch well at Triple-A next year before getting consideration for a big league uniform.
