Lamb signed a two-year contract with the Twins before the 2008 season, but ended up getting released in September after hitting just .233/.276/.322 in 81 games. He played well enough in a limited bench role with the Brewers down the stretch to be brought back into the mix for at-bats at third base and as a pinch-hitter in Milwaukee for 2009.
It was thought Lamb would get more playing time last year after enjoying a career-year in 2006. He had 70 less at-bats in 2007, and produced basically the same numbers. His playing time was hurt by the acquisition of Ty Wigginton at the trade deadline. Lamb agreed to a two-year deal with the Twins in December, where he should see regular at-bats at third base, although it could be in a platoon role with Brendan Harris.
Lamb had the best year of his career, hitting .307 with 12 homers and 22 doubles. He started 84 games between first and third base, his most since his rookie year when he started 129 games with the Rangers. He's a nice hitter with a good eye, as he struck out just 55 times in 381 at-bats in 2006, and he won't kill his team in the field. He will compete with Morgan Ensberg for the third base job.
Lamb remembered his proper place in 2005 following a career year in 2004. He has no business as anyone's regular first baseman, and that includes your fantasy team. If he's eligible at third base in your NL league, though, he's worth the roster spot for the .275 BA and 10 homers.
Lamb started over Morgan Ensberg for much of the stretch run of the 2004 season before losing the job to Ensberg in the final weeks. The Astros have made it clear that Ensberg, and not Lamb, is the future as third base, but a slow start from Ensberg in the 2005 season could get Lamb regular playing time. When the season begins, however, Lamb will be the backup third baseman and the team's top pinch-hit option late in games.
Lamb needs to head a team that could use a left-handed bat to draw walks and hit gap doubles. His best bet for a reasonable paycheck is to get optioned this spring and look for work elsewhere.
Lamb doesn't hit for enough power to play a corner infield spot everyday and can't handle any other position defensively. He's buried with Texas, and would do well to find another team that could utilize him better. The Herb Perry two-year extension all but eliminates Lamb from any long-term playing time in Texas.
