Gil Meche: Announces Retirement
Meche announced his retirement from baseball Tuesday in a Royals' press release.
ANALYSIS
This news is somewhat shocking considering he will leave about $12 million on the table, but apparently Meche felt he could no longer physically pitch. "I came into this game as a starting pitcher and unfortunately my health, more accurately, my shoulder, has deteriorated to the point where surgery would be the only option and at this stage of my life I would prefer to call it a career rather than to attempt to pitch in relief for the final year of my contract," he said in the release. Meche wraps up his 10-year career with a 84-83 record. His departure will free up a slot on the Royals' pitching staff, and it increases the chances of someone like Vincent Mazzaro breaking camp in the rotation. The club also has a fresh batch of cash to burn.

Meche will begin the next chapter of his career this season as he's expected to make a permanent move to the bullpen to prolong a career that has had its share of injury issues. The veteran isn't making the John Smoltz-like leap into the closer's role as the Royals already have Joakim Soria, and Ned Yost last year showed an inclination to use him earlier rather than later in games out of the bullpen, which means his fantasy value is limited.
