Rest-of-Season Projections
Hernandez left Double-A Harrisburg after Sunday's game when he was told by Nationals GM Mike Rizzo that he wouldn't be receiving a September call-up, the Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
He was pitching very well out of the Double-A bullpen, with a 1.72 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 15.2 innings, but the Nats have too many younger arms to sort through this September to give any innings to the ancient El Duque. His half-brother Livan says he hasn't given up thoughts of a return to the big leagues though, and will give it another shot next spring.

Hernandez had surgery in October 2007 to repair a dislocated second toe on his right foot, which had previously affected his balance on the mound. In addition, a bunion on that foot continued to bother him to the point where he tried a new windup -- without the high leg kick -- with little success. Hernandez ultimately needed surgery to fix a sore tendon (on the same foot) and missed the entire season, but is looking to hook on with another team for 2009. If that happens, he'll likely pitch in relief, while Hernandez has stated a desire to get an opportunity to close.
