Contreras cleared waivers Wednesday and has been released by the Reds, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Just two days after being optioned Monday in the Reds' first round of spring training cuts, the organization decided to cut bait and release Contreras. The 25-year-old right hander has been saddled with command issues as illustrated by his astronomical walk rate numbers in 2015 (6.8 BB/9 at Triple-A Louisville, 6.4 BB/9 with Cincinnati). He is now a free agent and could find a spot in another organization's camp as a depth option.

Contreras is going to have a difficult time developing as a big league reliever because of his awful control. He walked more batters (20) than he struck out (19) in 28 relief innings with the Reds in 2015, following a Triple-A campaign where he walked 30 batters in 39.2 innings. Making matters worse, he's starting to lose velocity in his fastball, averaging over a full mile per hour less in 2015 than he did the year before. It's still worth the Reds' time to see if they can harness his fastball - better than spending it on veteran retreads, but the outlook isn't too promising for Contreras.
While Contreras has a live arm, he has a long way to go before he can be considered an asset in the bullpen. His fastball reaches the mid-90s and he can miss bats (27 strikeouts in 20 innings at Double-A Pensacola before striking out 19 in 19.1 innings in the big leagues), but the right-hander just misses the strike zone way too often to be effective overall. He was one of the many relievers that fell short for the Reds in 2014, and why remaking the bullpen was a priority in the offseason.
Contreras was a starter at two levels in the minors in 2013, striking out a combined 122 batters over 132.1 innings. Prior to that he had worked as a closer, so it's possible, maybe even probable, that the Reds wanted him to get a lot of innings in and to learn how to use his full set of pitches. If he's going to be helpful in the back end of a major league bullpen, however, his control will need to improve -- upon moving up to Double-A last year he walked 21 batters in 42.1 innings. This is his second year on the 40-man roster, so chances are the Reds would like to take a look at him up close over the second half of the season.
