Rest-of-Season Projections
Released by Mariners
The Mariners cut ties with Hanson on Saturday, Andersen Pickard of MLBDailyDish.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After hitting under .200 at both the Triple-A and major-league levels last season, it seemed like an uphill battle for Hanson to secure an Opening Day roster spot with Seattle. With minor-league baseball likely canceled for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hanson may not have an opportunity to play baseball in a major-league organization this year, barring a late addition to another squad.

Hanson began the year at Triple-A after inking a minor-league deal with the Giants in December. He was promoted to the majors at the end of April after Joe Panik was placed on the DL, taking over at second base and hitting .298/.346/.638 with four homers and three stolen bases in 14 games before landing on the shelf with an injury of his own. Hanson assumed a utility role upon his return but his production wasn't the same over the final four months (.243/.259/.385 with four homers and three steals in 96 games). While Hanson possesses a modest power/speed combo, there remains skepticism about his plate discipline; he walked just 2.9% of the time in 2018 while whiffing at a 22.9% clip. The switch-hitter also showed dramatic platoon splits, as his OPS against RHP was 343 points higher than his mark against lefties. His defensive versatility will likely afford him a bench spot to open 2019.
