Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
The toughest prospects to value in dynasty leagues are the ones who are big-league ready, but do not have any standout tools and lack a defined role. Kubitza certainly fits this profile. The thought coming into 2015 was that Kubitza would be groomed to take over as the everyday third baseman in 2016 when David Freese’s contract was up. This could still be the case, but Kubitza struggled mightily in a brief taste of the majors, hitting .194 with zero extra-base hits and 15 strikeouts in 39 plate appearances. While this is a small sample, the Angels also started trying out Kubitza at second base, suggesting that they may no longer view him as the heir apparent at the hot corner. Kubitza has always shown good on-base skills and he has the potential for double-digit homers and double-digit steals over a full season, so he would remain intriguing if, in March, he appears to be on track for an everyday job in 2016, specifically if he is moved to second base.
A slow-but-steady approach to Kubitza's development seems to be paying dividends, as the former third-round pick fared well in his first stint at Double-A in 2014. He led the Southern League in walks while posting an OPS above .843 in all but the first month of the season. Perhaps Kubitza's biggest breakthrough came against left-handed pitching, as he hit a robust .326/.419/.528 against lefties in 2014, up from .253/.402/.380, but he was also far better on the basepaths, going 21-of-27 on stolen-base attempts after getting caught a whopping 16 times in 24 attempts in 2013. He figures to move up to the next rung on the minor league ladder to begin 2015, and if his past progression is any indication, he'll likely end up spending most of the year at Triple-A. His path to the big leagues is clearer following an offseason trade to the Angels, but Kubitza still needs to work on shortening his swing and cutting down his strikeouts (25.1% K% in 2014).
