Makes first appearance since elbow surgery
Johnson (elbow) made his 2018 debut for Double-A San Antonio on Monday, tossing a perfect inning in relief in the affiliate's 9-1 win over Northwest Arkansas.
ANALYSIS
It was Johnson's first appearance in affiliated ball in two seasons after he was sidelined for all of 2017 while recovering from October 2016 Tommy John surgery. The right-hander was formerly a well-regarded starting pitching prospect in the White Sox organization and made 22 career starts in the big leagues, but it appears the Padres will transition him to a bullpen role coming off the major arm injury.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
2014
Johnson began the 2014 season as the White Sox’s top pitching prospect and heir to a rotation spot, but he was all but forgotten on the eve of 2015. Control was the problem in 2014, as he walked 13.8 percent of the batters he faced in the majors, and then nearly 11.0 percent upon his demotion to Triple-A. He spent the subsequent offseason overhauling his mechanics, resulting in a diminished walk rate, an upped strikeout rate, and which helped him to win the Most Outstanding Pitcher award for the International League. The walks returned in his late-season promotion to Chicago, but he stands to grab a spot in the back end of the White Sox’s rotation after the club let Jeff Samardzija depart via free agency during the offseason.
