Makes first appearance since elbow surgery
PSan Diego Padres
April 17, 2018
Johnson (elbow) made his 2018 debut for Double-A San Antonio on Monday, tossing a perfect inning in relief in the affiliate's 9-1 win over Northwest Arkansas.
ANALYSIS
It was Johnson's first appearance in affiliated ball in two seasons after he was sidelined for all of 2017 while recovering from October 2016 Tommy John surgery. The right-hander was formerly a well-regarded starting pitching prospect in the White Sox organization and made 22 career starts in the big leagues, but it appears the Padres will transition him to a bullpen role coming off the major arm injury.

2014
Johnson began the 2014 season as the White Sox’s top pitching prospect and heir to a rotation spot, but he was all but forgotten on the eve of 2015. Control was the problem in 2014, as he walked 13.8 percent of the batters he faced in the majors, and then nearly 11.0 percent upon his demotion to Triple-A. He spent the subsequent offseason overhauling his mechanics, resulting in a diminished walk rate, an upped strikeout rate, and which helped him to win the Most Outstanding Pitcher award for the International League. The walks returned in his late-season promotion to Chicago, but he stands to grab a spot in the back end of the White Sox’s rotation after the club let Jeff Samardzija depart via free agency during the offseason.
Johnson entered the 2014 season as the White Sox's top pitching prospect, but it ended up being a lost year after an early-season flop in the rotation. He pitched into the sixth inning in one of his six major league starts, and then barely struck out more than he walked over his next 100-plus innings at Triple-A Charlotte. While Johnson will be in the mix for a back-end rotation spot in spring training, he has a lot of work to do to regain his standing in the organization.
Johnson may be one of the better under-the-radar pitching prospects in the league. He came out of college with some control issues, but those problems appear to have been alleviated, as evidenced by his 131:40 K:BB last season across Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte. He boasts a mid-90s fastball to go with a polished slider and changeup, which helped him achieve a .197 batting average against in the minor leagues. He does not project to be a big strikeout pitcher in the majors despite striking out eight in a September start against the Twins. Still, low strikeout rate pitchers have had success with the White Sox in recent years, and Johnson should contend for a rotation spot in spring training.
