Takes up coaching job
Cruz returned to the Cardinals' organization as a minor-league catching instructor Friday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Cruz spent five of his seven big-league seasons in a Cardinals uniform but had been away from the organization and away from a reliable major-league job since 2015. He'll end his professional career with a .216/.256/.308 line in 272 games.

Cruz has made a career out of being a backup catcher in the majors. Heading into 2016, he'd averaged 52 games per season and tended to keep his batting average just around the .200 mark. However, 2016 saw him slide down the organizational depth chart, and he spent almost the entirety of the season at Triple-A Omaha, where he hit .264/.347/.387 to go along with a .321 BABIP. Although he played just four games with the big club, Cruz signed with the Padres on a minor league deal over the offseason, which could offer him a bit more time at the major league level down the road. However, with Austin Hedges lined up for the bulk of the playing time, Cruz's upside is negligible at best if he manages to land a roster spot in San Diego.

Chance to make Reds roster
The Reds are contemplating keeping Cruz on the big-league roster to begin the season as a third catcher, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. "I think the world of Tony Cruz," manager Bryan Price said. "I think he's a big league player in my opinion. He's certainly been a topic of discussion. That frees up Mesoraco or Barnhart to pinch hit on the days they're not playing early.
