Signs minor league deal with Mariners

Waldrop has signed a minor league contract with the Mariners that includes an invite to spring training, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old Waldrop will get a fresh start with Seattle after fizzling out in the Reds' organization. A 12th-round pick in 2010, he hit just .252/.300/.363 with Triple-A Louisville last season and did little of note in a 15-game cup of coffee with the big club. He's limited defensively to first base and the outfield corners, and Waldrop simply doesn't hit enough to profile well at those positions as a big leaguer.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
Waldrop emerged as a prospect in 2014, but he regressed badly in 2015, hitting just .185/.211/.229 at Triple-A Louisville after a midseason promotion. Even though he was on the 40-man roster and the Reds needed outfield help, Waldrop was passed over for a September callup as a result of those struggles at Louisville. He may get a chance in 2016 to factor in the left field picture, but like a number of his other teammates, he's going to need demonstrate a skill he hasn't yet showed to do so.
Waldrop has been a slow-developing prospect since getting selected in the 12th round out of high school by the Reds, but 2014 was a big year for him. Between High-A Bakesfield and Double-A Pensacola, he hit .338/.385/.516, drew more walks than he had in the past and made a lot more contact. Was this a function of playing in a great hitters' environment in Bakersfield multiplied by a lucky BABIP, or was there actual growth? The Reds protected him on their 40-man roster this offseason to help find out the answer. Given the dearth of good bats in the upper reaches of their system, it's possible that Waldrop finds his way to the big leagues in 2015, most likely as a September callup but perhaps sooner.
