Inks minor league deal with Tigers

Cox signed a minor league contract with the Tigers on Thursday, Anthony French of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The former first-round draft pick is a .285 hitter in six minor league seasons, but he hasn't been able to crack the major leagues due to his high strikeout rates. Cox will likely be an organizational depth piece moving forward.

Cox spent the entirety of his age-25 season working at Triple-A New Orleans and made some modest strides at the plate, slashing .282/.344/.436 in the hitter-friendly PCL. A former first-round selection, the left-handed hitting Cox joined Miami’s deep farm system ahead of the 2013 season and while he remains buried on the organizational depth chart, there were a number of positives to emerge last season. While Cox's power stroke is a bit light for a corner infielder, he has shown an above average eye at the plate, drawing 68 walks over his last 675 minor league plate appearances (10.1 BB%). He also cut his strikeout rate to a career-best 18.9% in 2014 to go along with a solid .344 wOBA, and he continues to produce versus right-handed pitching, slashing .301/.366/.456 against right-handers in 239 at-bats last year. With the addition of Martin Prado in Miami, Cox's path to a starting job at the big league level is currently blocked.
Cox was flipped to Miami from the Cardinals at the 2012 trade deadline for reliever Edward Mujica. A former first-round pick, Cox has never truly broken out in the minors, posting a .762 OPS over 925 at-bats across three levels. Last season, Cox had a 22:90 BB:K, though he did show improved plate discipline after being acquired from St. Louis, posting a .253/.321/.368 line in 24 games at Double-A Jacksonville. The Marlins currently have him working at third base, a clear position of need in the big leagues, but Cox remains a work in progress in the field and his path to the big leagues will rely primarily on his development at the dish.
David Freese's postseason emergence may slow Cox's arrival to the big leagues, but the 22-year-old clearly has a bright future. He hit a respectable .293/.355/.432 with Double-A Springfield last year, and he projects as a high-OBP hitter with moderate power. There isn't a lot of speed there, and his BB:K ratio (29:69) needs some improvement, but Cox could end up being a decent option at the hot corner by the middle of the decade.
Cox was drafted in the first round last June and is projected as a high-average, high-OBP hitter with moderate power. He's just 21, but given that the Cardinals have a need at third base, he's a name to know in deep leagues when it comes time to draft in 2011. Defensively, he still needs some polish, but the opportunity to collect big league at-bats is here should he prove capable of fielding his position.
