Robinson signed a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks assigned him to Triple-A Reno, where he'll presumably spend all of the 2015 season. Robinson was once held in some regard as a prospect after hitting 26 homers as a 23-year-old at Triple-A in 2011, but his sky-high strikeout rate (32.6%) over his 319 career MLB plate appearances seems to have damaged his chances of becoming a regular player in the majors.

Robinson was promoted to Seattle in late July last season and, perhaps surprisingly, received significant playing time in the final couple months. A below-average contact rate continues to hamper him, however. He struck out 43 times in 145 at-bats with the Mariners (.70 contact rate), which is nothing new. Only in his first year in the minors (2008) was his contract rate ever above a modest .75. Robinson has speed on the basebaths, but his lack of walks don't help that mission. He's nothing special in the outfield, either, with a poor arm. The Mariners traded him in November to Baltimore, where he might have an easier path to the majors. But even then, landing the fourth outfield job in spring looks like a tough task unless he makes significant gains.
Robinson was acquired by the Mariners from the Dodgers in the three-team deal that sent Erik Bedard to the Red Sox last season. He was called up shortly thereafter and will compete this spring for the left-field job. He's a switch-hitter with outstanding speed, but he also has a tendency to strike out too often. With the Mariners, he totaled 61 strikeouts to just eight walks in 44 games. Robinson has the ability to put up a strong batting average, power and speed numbers, but he needs to get control of his strikeouts first.
A graduate of the same high school that produced several former big leaguers (most notably Daryl Strawberry), Robinson has taken huge strides the past two seasons in turning tools into production. The key? A walk rate that has jumped from seven to 14 percent over a two-year period. After batting .306/.375/.500 in the hitter-friendly California League the year prior, Robinson proved 2009 was no fluke, batting .300/.404/.439 as a 22-year-old in the Double-A Southern League in 2010. That line included nine home runs and 38 stolen bases, so this is clearly a player worth keeping an eye on in keeper leagues.
The 22-year-old Robinson hit .300/.373/.493 between the High-A and Double-A levels. Robinson's breakout season also included 17 homers and 43 stolen bases, numbers that should make keeper leaguers stand up and take notice. The Los Angeles-born Robinson had been known more for his tools than anything prior to 2009, but now he's a legitimate prospect after the breakout. Further progress in Double-A this season could have him in line for a 2011 major league look.
