Rest-of-Season Projections
Takes talents to Korea
Van Slyke signed a one-year, $320,000 contract Monday with the Doosan Bears of the Korean Baseball Organization, Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net reports.
ANALYSIS
The salary exceeds what Van Slyke would have received had he remained with the Marlins on a minor-league deal for the rest of the season, likely making it an easy decision for the 31-year-old to head overseas. Van Slyke has spent the entire 2018 campaign with the Marlins' Triple-A affiliate in New Orleans, slashing .248/.354/.467 across 161 plate appearances. If he's able to make an impact in Korea over the next couple of months, Van Slyke could net a larger deal in the KBO this winter or perhaps generate renewed interest from MLB teams.

A pair of ailments -- back and wrist injuries -- limited Van Slyke to 52 games last season, the lowest total he's played since his debut season in 2012. Those injuries may have sapped Van Slyke's power as well, as he went deep just once in 113 plate appearances, providing an empty .225/.292/.314 line in the process. While part-time players can struggle to settle in at the plate with sporadic playing time, it's becoming clear that Van Slyke's 11-homer surge while working mostly on the small side of a platoon in 2014 is as good as it gets. Considered to be among the non-tender candidates in December, the Dodgers opted to extend Van Slyke a contract and keep him in the fold as spring training approaches. The Dodgers' outfield depth chart is more crowded than ever, which may ultimately lead the 30-year-old to a new club sooner rather than later.
