Rodriguez was a non-factor in the organization last season due to a hamstring injury, and given his lack of prospect shine, the Reds opted to send him off the 40-man roster. He's only 24, so there's some room for development, although his strikeout woes could keep him from becoming anything more than an organizational depth piece.

Given the fact that he was out of options, many expected Rodriguez to break camp as a fourth outfielder at the major league level. Instead, 2016 became a completely lost season for the 24-year-old. A hamstring injury cropped up during spring training, leading to a trip to the disabled list to kick off the campaign. Then, as it seemed like he was on the up-and-up, his hamstring flared up again and wound up keeping him out of virtually the entire season. The former prospect managed to appear in 11 rehab games with High-A Daytona, but the damage had already been done: Rodriguez was designated for assignment after the season and was forced to enter the free agent market with just 27 major league at-bats to his name. Scouts once thought that his combination of power and speed could translate, but that now seems like a distant memory.

Rodriguez held his own in his first season at Triple-A Louisville but didn't do much more, hitting .268/.309/.429 there with 17 walks and 80 strikeouts over 308 at-bats. He's never had that big power season that many scouts thought that he might get when he was signed out of Venezuela as a 15-year-old. An unfortunately-timed calf strain cost him a September callup - it's too bad because he would have found playing time in the outfield following Billy Hamilton's shoulder injury and Marlon Byrd's trade to the Giants. He might fit into the Reds' left field picture if they put Adam Duvall at third base, but he profiles right now as a fourth outfielder.

2015 is a critical season for Rodriguez -- he's in his final option year because he was signed at such a young age. He had pockets of success at Double-A Pensacola, but found it difficult to excel over a long period of time. When he got a September trial, he was predictably overmatched, striking out 12 times in 29 plate appearances. However, Rodriguez has at least shown some improvement at Double-A in terms of making better contact, which is more than can be said of teammate Juan Duran.

The Reds haven't yet gotten big dividends from their two high-profile 16-year-old prospect signees in Rodriguez and Juan Duran, but there's at least some reason to believe they still could get some mileage from Rodriguez. After a rough 2012 where Rodriguez faltered so much at High-A Bakersfield that he had to go back to Low-A, he was much better in 2013 in his age-20 season. Rodriguez drew walks at a much higher clip last year, giving at least some reason to hope that he'll eventually improve his shaky contact rate. What's rough for Rodriguez's prospect status is that 2014 will already be his second year on the 40-man roster, and he's unlikely to defeat the upper levels of the minors in rapid succession, making it possible for him to be out of options even before he makes it in the majors.
