The promotion of Matt Harvey to Double-A Binghamton has resulted in Holt being pulled from the rotation and sent to the bullpen, ESPN New York reports.
ANALYSIS
Since opening the season by limiting opponents to two runs (one earned) in 18 innings over his first three Binghamton starts, Holt is 2-6 with a 6.96 ERA in 10 starts and has walked 37 and hit two batters in 42.2 innings. Holt seemed to have regained his prospect status earlier in the year after refining his off-speed pitch and finding some lost velocity, but that looks like it was a mirage, given how much he has fallen off since his first three starts.

Now 26, Holt's development has been stuck in neutral since 2009 when he flashed decent peripherals with poor results at Double-A. The Mets converted him to relief work during his fourth season at Binghamton, and the light bulb does not appear to be turning on in terms of improved control (5.3 BB/9), although the new role led to an increase in strikeouts. If he is able to figure it out, Holt will likely be broken in with a low-leverage bullpen gig and need to prove over a prolonged stretch that he can find the strike zone consistently and retire big league hitters.
Holt, the 33rd overall pick in 2008, started his career with a bang, dominating High-A St.Lucie to earn a promotion to Double-A Binghamton. That is where the good news ends, as Holt sprained his ankle in his first outing Binghamton, missed three weeks and never recaptured his early-season form. Those struggles continued into 2010, as an injury to his right wrist set him back early before he struggled with a new delivery. Despite the poor overall numbers, Holt started to make progress with his secondary stuff, but he still needs to command his curveball and changeup better to make them effective. Holt had a good Arizona Fall League, but the jury is still out as to whether he can put it all together and show enough to move up the ladder.
After a rough first start, Holt dominated High-A St.Lucie over his next eight starts to earn a promotion to Double-A Binghamton. That is where the good news ends, as Holt sprained his ankle in his first outing, forcing him to miss three weeks. He never recaptured his early-season form. Holt struggled with his secondary pitches, relying too much on and overthrowing his fastball to get him out of jams, which led to poor control. When on, Holt mixes a mid-90s fastball with a developing curveball and changeup. His future success will depend on him harnessing and using his secondary pitches. He will open 2010 back at Double-A.
