Past Fantasy Outlooks

2014
2010
Spruill made a spot start for the Diamondbacks, but his workload came mostly in a relief role last season. Splitting his time between the rotation and bullpen at Triple-A Reno, the right-hander had better peripherals than his 6.04 ERA would suggest. While his home-run rate spiked in Reno last season, Spruill has proven capable of inducing a lot of outs on the ground (47.8% groundball rate in his limited opportunities in the big leagues) and avoiding free passes. If everything goes well, he'll chew up innings in middle relief for the Red Sox after he was traded to Boston in the offseason.
Spruill reached the majors for the first time last season and appeared in six games, including two starts, with the Diamondbacks. As a groundball pitcher, Spruill will always have a shot in Arizona because of the ballpark, but his numbers are going to have to better than they were with Triple-A Reno last season. He will struggle to make the rotation out of spring training, but may find himself in the majors for a few more spot starts before 2014 is over.
The 2008 second-round pick could be a breakout candidate in 2010 after posting a 3.25 ERA and 118:29 K:BB ratio in 135.2 innings between rookie ball and Low-A last season. Spruill has impressive control with decent (7.83 K/9IP) strikeout numbers. He'll begin the season at High-A and could rise rapidly.
