Darnell (shoulder) signed a minor league contract with the Rays on Monday, which includes an invite to spring training, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Darnell has had his past two seasons cut short by serious shoulder injuries, and he hit just .246 over 15 games in Triple-A last season. He'll look to earn a spot on the big league roster, but in all likelihood will start 2014 in the minors.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2013
2012
2010
The 2012 season was not kind to Darnell as he suffered a left shoulder injury in May that ended his season prematurely. Prior to that he was able to get in 137 plate appearances at Triple-A Tucson, where he did well enough to get promoted to the bigs, before his injury occurred. Going into the 2013 season, he'll be 26 years old and trying to make up for lost time. A rather large road block to seeing him play every day in the majors is Chase Headley, who had a breakout season in 2012 and is entrenched at third base. Still, Darnell is worth following as he showed nice power (23 home runs) and a good eye at the plate (.406 OBP), while in the minors in 2011, as the Padres may find other positions to give him an opportunity.
Darnell is arguably one of the best prospects in the Padres' organization right now, but will remain blocked by Chase Headley for the time being. He's got solid plate discipline, as evidenced by his 16.0 percent walk rate in the minors, and has some good pop in his bat. Between Double and Triple-A last season, Darnell smacked 23 home runs, had a 0.92 BB/K ratio and posted a triple slash line of .317/.415/.573. He'll start down in Triple-A this season, but if injury befalls Headley as it usually does, Darnell will be the first to get the call.
Darnell is one of several polished hitters in the Padres' system who doesn't excite scouts, but who takes a professional approach to the game and projects as a consistent contributor. He enters 2010 as a top prospect and could advance rapidly with a strong start at High-A.
