Scheppers signed a contract to play in Japan in 2018, Joey Hayden of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Scheppers spent the majority of the 2017 campaign at Triple-A Round Rock, posting an unremarkable 4.84 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 48.1 innings. He saw some brief action with the Rangers, though his struggles continued as he allowed three runs in four innings. Scheppers will now look to get his career back on track in the Japanese Pacific League in what will be his age-31 season.

Scheppers was plagued with injuries the past few years, and in an effort to shore up some of his knee problems, the right-hander underwent knee surgery shortly before the start of spring training. This operation kept him out for the bulk of the season, limiting him to just 10 appearances after rosters expanded in September. As one would expect after a layoff of his duration, the 2009 first-rounder was less than spectacular upon his return to the Rangers bullpen, holding a 5:3 K:BB en route to a 4.15 ERA in his 8.2 innings pitched. Ever since having elbow issues back in 2014, his average fastball velocity and strikeout rate have both decreased, which creates a bad combination with his worsening control. Unless he does a complete 180, Scheppers will likely spend most of 2017 in middle relief and won't have much of a fantasy impact.
