Rest-of-Season Projections
Varvaro officially retired from professional baseball Monday, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old was clicking along with a 2.83 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 28.2 innings at Triple-A Pawtucket, but since he wasn't on the Red Sox's 40-man roster, a promotion wasn't forthcoming. Rather than slumming it in the minors or asking for a release, Varvaro has apparently decided to hang up his spikes. The right-hander appeared in six big-league seasons as a member of three teams, producing a combined 3.23 ERA and 1.28 WHIP across 183.2 innings.

Varvaro looked like one of those under-the-radar offseason pickups that work out for teams. The Braves designated the right-hander for assignment after two successful seasons out of the bullpen and the Red Sox pounced. Varvaro won a spot in Boston’s bullpen to start the season, but was hit hard in 11 innings, giving up five runs on 14 hits and eight walks before the Red Sox designated him for assignment. The Cubs picked him up and were ready to use him but spotted something in a bullpen session. That led to some testing where it was discovered he had some bone chips and a tear in his pronator flexor tendon. He underwent surgery, ending his season, and was returned to Boston as damaged goods. The Red Sox eventually outrighted Varvaro off the 40-man roster and he elected free agency instead of accepting an assignment. If the elbow his sound, Varvaro should find himself employment in some team’s bullpen.
