That loud rumbling you hear is the victory lap Nelson Cruz deniers are running as age finally caught up with the long-time slugger. It only took 15 seasons for his wRC+ to finish below league average, as Cruz has long defied the aging curve which was supposed to chew him up many years ago. The overall numbers were disappointing with Washington, yet the ageless wonder still had 93rd percentile max exit velocity, 84th percentile average Exit Velocity, and 81st percentile hard-hit average. He did all that despite left eye inflammation which caused him problems that needed an October surgery to correct. After the downturn in production, Cruz was forced to settle for a one-year, $1 million deal with the Padres, who may envision him serving as a short-side platoon mate at designated hitter with the lefty-hitting Matt Carpenter. If Cruz shows early in the season that he still has enough juice in his bat to warrant more playing time against righties, he could end up capturing the DH role all to himself.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Indicates he's done playing
Cruz indicated on The Adam Jones Podcast on Thursday that he doesn't expect to continue his playing career in 2024.
ANALYSIS
Jones asked whether "this was the last we'll see of Nelson Cruz," to which Cruz replied, "I think so, yeah." It wasn't exactly a retirement announcement, but it does appear Cruz sees the writing on the wall. The 43-year-old produced just a .658 OPS over the last two seasons and was released midseason by the Padres this year. If it is indeed the end, Cruz will retire having slashed .274/.343/.513 with 464 home runs over parts of 19 big-league seasons.
