PMilwaukee Brewers
November 19, 2014
Ely signed a minor league contract with the Brewers on Wednesday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Ely seemed to find his niche working out of the bullpen after returning from Tommy John surgery last season, posting a 2.52 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 35:14 K:BB over 39.1 innings with the Red Sox's Triple-A Pawtucket affiliate. There's an outside chance Ely could crack the major league roster at some point next year, but he'd likely work exclusively in middle relief.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2010
Ely's hot start for the Dodgers in 2010 seems like a lifetime ago, though he did turn things around after a dismal 2011. Making 27 starts for Triple-A Albuquerque, Ely finished with a strong 3.20 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in a tough environment for pitchers while pushing his strikeout rate to a career-high (full season) 8.8 K/9. The Astros acquired him from the Dodgers in December, increasing the chances that Ely will at least begin the year with a rotation spot in the big leagues.
Ely mania was in full bloom on June 1 of last season, as the prize of the Juan Pierre trade with the White Sox tossed seven shutout innings against Arizona to lower his ERA to 2.54 in six big league starts. That's when the wheels fell off and Ely posted an 8.04 ERA the rest of the way. With a fastball that averages just 87.4 mph, Ely profiles as a back of the rotation starter at best, and he's probably missed even that opportunity in Los Angeles.
Ely posted a very good 2009 season at Double-A Birmingham, with a 2.82 ERA, .241 BAA and 125:50 K:BB in 156.1 innings. He got better as the year progressed, posting a 1.68 ERA and a complete game in his 10 starts after the Double-A All-Star break. He should start the 2010 season with Triple-A Charlotte and continue to climb the ranks of the team’s pitching prospects.
