Martinez, on the comeback trail after 2006 Tommy John surgery, looked sharp in a brief stint at Triple-A but never got the call back up to the big leagues. With another offseason between him and the knife he should enter camp fighting for a set-up role behind Matt Lindstrom, but his relative youth and lack of work the last few seasons could work against him in that battle.
After emerging as an intriguing bullpen prospect in 2006, Martinez hurt his elbow and underwent Tommy John surgery. He returned for 27.1 innings over four levels, including a brief late-season stint with the Marlins, and for the most part appeared to be 100 percent with a 21:6 K:BB ratio in 24.2 minor league innings. He'll be just 22 this season, and given the other power arms in the Marlins bullpen he could begin the season back at Triple-A until the team needs him.
Martinez was a surprise winner of a bullpen spot with the Marlins out of spring training, but quickly hurt his elbow and eventually underwent Tommy John surgery. Assuming he recovers without complications, he'll return as just another high-upside arm in the Florida system looking for an opportunity.
Martinez put together a good season as a closer at High-A, with 65 Ks against 22 walks in 60 innings. His inexperience works against rapid advancement, but there are certainly plenty of opportunities for a go-getter in the vacuum that is the Marlins major league roster. If he survives Double-A, south Florida awaits.
