Castro agreed to a minor league contract with the Mariners on Wednesday, the team's official website reports.

ANALYSIS
Castro spent all of last season with Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox organization. He compiled a 7-9 record and 4.93 ERA in 31 games, including 15 starts. Castro will have a shot to make the club out of spring training, but he will likely begin the season with Triple-A Tacoma.

His size (5'7) has kept him under the radar for the most part and he's bounced around between the minors and majors in each of the last two seasons. Castro spent most of the season at Double-A Reading for the Phillies (8-2, 4.40 ERA in 27 games) but was sent to the Jays in exchange for Matt Stairs. He's been both a starter and reliever in the minors, but it remains to be seen what Toronto has in mind for him. Castro has a plus-fastball and enough of a curve to be effective as a sort reliever, but there's little chance of him earning a fantasy relevant late-inning role in 2009.

Castro has the arsenal to start, led by 92-95 mph fastball and a good curve, but at just 5-7, he lacks the build for the heavy share of innings that comes with being in the rotation. Odds are, he'll be penciled in long term as a set-up man, and in 2008, the Phillies will probably send him back to Triple-A for some seasoning and an opportunity to tighten up his command. Don't be surprised if he's contributing in the bullpen before too much longer.

Castro is an intriguing player. A Rule 5 pick in late 2005, he opened 2006 with Texas and was traded midseason to Philadelphia. He pitched sparsely but well, flashing a 92-95 mph fastball and power curveball and eventually earning some shots in game situations. He isn't someone to draft immediately, given his size (5-8, 160 lbs.) and inexperience, but keep your eye on him.

The Royals traded Castro, the No. 1 choice of the 2005 Rule 5 draft, to the Rangers in December for infielder Esteban German. The Rangers hope Castro will stick as a situational lefty out of their pen.
