The Mets outrighted Henn to Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday, thereby removing him from the 40-man roster and making him a free agent, ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports.
ANALYSIS
Henn signed a minor-league deal with the Mets in April and posted a 2.81 ERA in 52 appearances out of the bullpen with Las Vegas, earning a September promotion. With the Mets needing to free up space on the 40-man roster, Henn was expendable, but he could get a spring training invite to earn a spot on the parent club.

Henn received an opportunity to serve as a lefty specialist for the Yankees last season, but his command 28:27 K:BB ratio left something to be desired and opposing hitters enjoyed plenty of success against him (.409 OBP allowed) during his time in the majors. Henn may get another chance during spring training, but his command needs to improve if he hopes to stick with the Yankees and avoid the dreaded "Quadruple-A" label.
Henn may have a future as a long reliever, as he's never been able to win consistently as a starter at any professional level. Control was a problem in 2006, as he issued 25 free passes in 52 innings of mixed work as a starter and reliever between Triple-A Columbus and New York. He'll likely spend this season at Triple-A to complete his transition to reliever.
Henn made a couple of terrible starts for the Yankees midway through 2005, but was excellent after returning to Triple-A, putting up a 3.23 ERA for Columbus. He throws in the mid-to-high 90s and won't be 25 until after the season starts, so there's a reasonable chance he can grow to help the Yankees or, better, contribute elsewhere. He's not a top prospect but worth stashing on a minor league roster since he's close to making it to the majors.
Henn was a 26th round draft pick in 2000 by the Yankees, who had his career de-railed by 2002 Tommy John surgery. Originally projected as a starter, he can throw in the high 90s but hasn’t effectively developed a breaking pitch, and the surgery likely stunted that growth further. At an advanced age of 22, it will be difficult to effectively develop a second and third major league caliber pitch, and he’s likely being looked at more as a potential reliever these days.
